Oslo, Norway June 30 2015

Today we arrive in Oslo, which is known as the Green City.  Norway's capital is full of forests and water!  It is surrounded by nature and the head of an inlet known as the Oslofjord.

Ninety five percent of Norway is covered by forest and more than seventy percent consist of mountains lakes, moorland and glaciers.

We are on the Oslo Highlights excursion, adult only departure.  The sun is shining and the sky is clear as can be.  Local temperature is going to be 70 degrees today.  So it is a truly a warm day.  The warmth feels wonderful.  No sweaters needed!

We work our way through the city of Oslo on our bus catching highlights along the way.  We see the new opera house and well as a sculpture that resides in the harbor.

We then work our way towards the Holmenkollbakken Ski Jump site.  During the summer you can zip line down the ski jump!  There are many people doing it.  This is a large ski jumping hill located in Holmenkollen just outside Oslo.  It has a capacity of 30,000 spectators.  It is home to many World Cup Championships as well as hosting the 1952 Winter Olympics.

Our next stop is Frogner Park located in the borough of Frogner in Oslo.   The park is famous for the Vigeland sculptures created by Gustav Vigeland between 1920 and 1943.

It is the world's largest sculpture park made by a single artist and is the most popular tourist attraction of Norway, with 1 to 2 million visitors coming each year.  The park is open 24 hours a day. There are over 200 sculptures.

Then we go to the Viking Museum where they have viking ships on display along with other Viking items.  The Museum is located in Bygdoy in Oslo.  The ships are the Oseberg, Gokstad, and Tune.  There is one other ship, but can't remember the name of it.
The museum is most famous for the completely whole Oseberg ship, excavated from the largest known ship burial in the world.

We then head back to the ship where we have a beautiful view of the Akershus Castle.  It is a medieva castle that was built to protect Oslo.  It was also used as a prison.  Historians believe the castle was constructed somewhere in the late 1290's by King Haakon V.  It was built because Oslo needed a stronger defensive system.

I grab a bite to eat and then visit with friends, Debbie and Jeanette, up on deck 9 enjoying the warmth of the day.

Everyone is all aboard on time and we head out of Oslo for our next port.

Tonight in the Walt Disney Theater it is the Comedy and Juggling of Pete Matthews.  If you get a chance to see him, don't miss him.  He is hysterically funny.

Dinner is awesome, with special treats abound.

The we get a double bonus, because we get to see Hector is Magic in Fathom's for the adult show.  As usual, his show is excellent.  Highly recommend seeing him also.

After that, it is time to head back to the room.  Another port day tomorrow!

Goodnight from the Disney Magic.

  1. Hey, Linda. Really enjoyed cruising with you, Elaine, and the gang. Love your blog. Sorry that we missed you on the 29th. You and Elaine were probably still asleep when we left the ship.
